     Do you teach legal writing?
Do you administer a legal writing
program? If you do either,
register now for this summer's
Legal Writing Conference, to be
held August 4, 5, and 6 at the
University of Puget Sound in
Tacoma, Washington.

     This summer's conference is
the third conference sponsored by
the Legal Writing Institute. The
first conference, held in 1984,
attracted more than eighty
participants from fifty law
schools; the second conference,
held in 1986, attracted more than
one hundred participants from sixty
law schools.

            The Program

During the first half of the
conference, the focus will be on
the teaching of legal writing.

Participants will learn how to
design effective writing
assignments, how to evaluate
student papers, and how to teach
more effectively. Those interested
in legal drafting will also learn
how to set up a legal drafting
program and how to teach drafting
to students.

During the second half of the
conference, participants will be
able to select from a variety of
sessions and workshops. Some of
the topics that will be covered
include the following: composition
theory; effective use of
technology; the politics of
teaching legal writing, teaching
legal analysis, training legal
writing instructors, and getting
changes made. A copy of the
conference schedule and a list of
presenters is set out on the next
page,

     The conference has also been
designed to give participants the
opportunity to meet informally with
each other. On Thursday evening,
