Division Offers Unequalled Resources for Leaders
aw students are leaders. Whether
in school, our communities, or in
another arena, the unique skill
set we gain while in law school
offers opportunities and respon-
sibilities to help others. In case you
have any doubt about our future role
in society, recall the words of Dick the
Butcher in Henry VI. In seeking to re-
move the one thing that stood between
his rebellious group and an unimpeded
revolution, he famously said, The first
thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers.
Dick's sophistry is bang on: lawyers (and
law students) are leaders. James L. Borkman

your skill set, the Law Student Division james.borkman@gmail.com
has dedicated resources to helping law
school leaders. As a member of the Division, you have access to the information,
tools, and resources that can help you hone your leadership skills during your
time in law school.
The ABA has a wealth of resources for leaders on the Law Student Division
homepage, www. abanet. orl/lsd. The website offers links relating to leadership
at the local, regional, and national levels. You can find proposals affecting legal
education, electronic distribution lists for accessing local and national leaders,
and programming materials and suggestions from other law students about ef-
fective leadership. The information is frequently updated, and I encourage you
to check out the leadership section.
One of the best ways to develop your leadership skills is by holding a national
leadership position. There are more than 80 such positions in the Law Student
Division. Elections for the three division delegate positions and vice-chair SBA
take place in August at the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco. (The deadline
to apply is June 1.) I encourage each of you to expand your leadership skills
while helping your fellow students and consider running for national office.
To help leaders with vision, but without funding, the Law Student Division
created its Grant Program. The program provides financial and program support
each year to student organizations of ABA-approved law schools to establish
first-time programs and activities that emphasize diversity, ethics, professional-
ism training, and public service. This year alone we have approved more than
$10,000 worth of Grant Program money to law schools across the country Visit
www.abanet.org/lsd/grant for more information.
Finally, after all that hard work pays off, why not be recognized for your
efforts? Each year, the Law Student Division recognizes the achievements of
individual law students, law school organizations, and law schools on a national
level through its Annual Awards Program. Visit www. abanet. org/lsd/awards. I
encourage you to reach out to me if you have questions about the Division, its
leadership positions, or the tools, information, and resources offered. A.
