ABSTRACT
Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath caused widespread loss and
disruption to New Orleans and the surrounding communities. This
review examines the impact of disasters, specifically Hurricane
Katrina, on children's mental health. Particular attention is given to the
long-term effects of untreated mental health concerns, which include
pervasive problems such as emotional and behavioral dysregulation as
well as increased academic problems. The article also addresses
lessons learned about meeting the mental health needs of children in a
post-disaster environment by examining successes and failures within
the current system and legislative aims designed to ameliorate the vast
level of need for mental health services that still exists 5 years after the
storm.

and Shereen Naser are School Psychology doctoral students participating in the
leadership training.
