                     EXPLANATION.

      One of the functions of the Treaty Division of the
Department of State is to collect, classify and make
readily available inforzaoion concerning the various
treaties that are in foreo or have been signed between and
among the several countries of the world. In view of the
fact that the Treaty for the Renunciation of War is
expected to become effective during the month of July,
it seems appropriate at this time to publish a list of
the various treatius to which the United States is a
party, both multipartite and bipartite, which are
classified as having the genersl purpose of promoting
international peace. It would seem not inappropriate to
make a list inclusive also of the treaties to which the
United States is not a party, but the work of collecting
information in regard to such treaties has not at the
