Issued under delegated authority June 1, 1977 Applications of EVERGREEN INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES, INC. GREAT NORTHERN AIRLINES, INC. Dockets 30943, 30939 for an emergency exemption pursuant to Section 416(b) of the Federal Aviation Act of 1958, as amended. ORDER On May 27, 1977, Great Northern Airlines, an authorized intrastate air carrier within the State of Alaska, telegraphically requested emergency authorization to provide scheduled passenger, mail, and cargo service between Anchorage and Fairbanks, on the one hand, and Point Barrow, Kotzebue, Unalakleet and Nome, on the other hand. Great Northern's request is prompted by the pilot work stoppage against Wien Air Alaska which normally serves the points in question. l/ In support of its application, Great Northern states that although.: the Board granted an emergency exemption to Alaska Airlines, it (Alaska) has not been able to successfully operate under the exemption and thus service to the named points has deteriorated. 2/ Great Northern would immediately operate two L-188 Electras, and has a third Electra available for use. On the same date, Evergreen International Airlines, Inc., a certificated supplemental carrier, orally applied for an emergency exemp- tion. Evergreen, also citing the work stoppage, proposes to wet-lease charter to Wien one Lockheed Electra from June 1 through June 19, 1977, l/ The strike began on May 7, 1977. 2/ See Order 77-5-37. The pilots of Alaska Airlines refused to cross the picket lines of the Wien pilots and the carrier was not successful in obtaining a temporary injunction to compel them to operate the exempted service.
