TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
In the case of Tom Mooney, certain supreme values are at stake.

Mooney is a symbol. As such, no one can wisely afford to disregard
him. The famous prisoner's case involves us all, particularly in times
like these.

Here is due process of law, absolute equality before the law of every
man, denied. Here is the American ideal of justice, democracy and the
square deal, ravished. Here is the right of the workers to better their
condition, more particularly the right of labor to organize and deal col-
lectively through representatives of its own choosing, violated. Here
is the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, openly, officially
and persistently profaned. Here is the most priceless of human values-
genuine freedom of thought, of conscience, of speech, press and assem-
blage desecrated. In short, the very foundations of popular self-govern-
ment are menaced, the very grounds of the religious enterprise danger-
ously threatened.

With these facts staring us in the face, we, a group of representa-
tives of religion, sincere American citizens, have associated ourselves to-
gether. We feel that these values are too great to be dissipated by pre-
judice and passion. We believe it imperative that some means be found
forthwith to end their prostitution to subversive private ends. Wei
confess we are belated; but, by the help of God we are organizing a cru-
sade to recover them.

With this in view, we accept the specific task of aiding to create a
public will to free Mooney and Billings, and an organization designed
to help make the will effective.
