Adams ASSISTANT EDITORS Deborah Schloss Beverly Horn Joanne Schamest THE YEAR IN RETROSPECT by Career Opportunities Committee Co-chairs Colette Winston and Francine Pinto, and Board Liaison Pat Gillman Last summer, as our planning began, we set high goals for the Career Opportunities Committee. We wanted the COC to reach out to the different experience levels represented by our membership. We wanted to engage other WBA committees and forums in our programming efforts. We wanted to increase attendance at our monthly lectures and networking sessions and the number of volunteers who staff our projects. And, we wanted to stretch our funds to the limit. With a lot of help from our members, we met these goals. Our monthly lectures, headed by Pat Cooper, covered such general career concerns as time management, assertiveness and persuasion, surviving weekends and vacations, putting your best self forward, paths to partnership, and career opportunities in varied areas of law (banking, international law, computers, trade associations, lobbying, and communications law). Over 400 people attended our nine programs, which had revenues of more than $2,000. Our monthly networking sessions drew approximately 180 people, thanks to the energies of Kathryn Winsburg and Judith Keith, who assembled small discussion groups, each with a leader, on topics such as cover letters, resumes, creative job hunting techniques, changing career specialties, starting your own law practice, marketing yourself, assertiveness on the job hunt and the job, stress management, finding a part-time job, interviewing skills, pro bono work, finding a job on Capitol Hill, how to use a headhunter, and dressing for success. Armed with fresh croissants, Toni LeBel implemented one of our new ideas, practice and procedure breakfasts. The first two, co-sponsored with the Sole Practitioners Forum, offered practical information on managing new cases and various issues in landlord-tenant law. The third, sponsored jointly with the Communications Law Forum, concerned communications law practice. New job listings, also managed by LeBel, with the assistance of Alison Hamm and Julie Zignego, were collected throughout the year and placed in our three job listings notebooks. A sample of listings was published in each monthly Career Opportunities Bulletin. Kathy Gunning coordinated four Who's Who Project groups in the areas of communications, tax, real estate, and criminal law. The results will be published in the bulletin next fall.
