In the year 1981-1982, the Naturalization Committee
represented the Women's Bar Association at the monthly
ceremony held at the U. S. District Court in Washington,
D. C. on the first Tuesday of each month. The number of
new citizens sworn in averaged 40 per month, with a range
of 32 as a low, and a recent high of 85 in the month of
May 1982. The number seems to be related to the efficiency,
or lack thereof, of the local Immigration and Naturalization
Service which processes the citizenship petitions. Because
of some increase in personnel in this particular area of
the Washington District office, the number has recently been
rising.
Each month a different District Court judge presides at
the ceremony, as well as a different speaker chosen by the
Bar Association of the District of Columbia from the legal
community, or the political arena, who would be a fitting
!rson to welcome the new citizens on such a special occasion.

The co-sponsoring organization (and there are 12 different
ones) subsidizes the cost of refreshments for each reception.
Mary Lou Collector, who is a dedicated volunteerhelps each
month with setting up, clean up, and coordinating the work
of the co-sponsor for the reception. I am the chief contact
with the co-sponsor in terms of the introductory speech which
gives an overview of the co-sponsor as well as the Women's
Bar Association, and as a general coordinator for anything
else which may arise before, during, or after the ceremony.
Please note that Mary Lou Collector was truly delighted to
receive public recognition at the last reception when I
presented her with the Certificate of Appreciation from our
organization. We should do this on a regular basis, and
perhaps express our gratitude in any other way that is suitable.
The only problem which I have encountered is lack of
nen's Bar Association members attending the ceremony. It
is not because they are essentially needed at the reception
for the actual help with serving, although that would still
be appreciated, but in terms of having more there as representatives
of our Association.
I would appreciate more help in that area in the coming year.
I would also like to know if there are other Association members
interested in serving as Chairperson, and if not, how long you
wish me to continue in that capacity.
