                 The Cybersecurity Workforce and
                              Gender Gaps

                                Updated: May 2024

Cybersecurity has traditionally been a male-dominated field, with a more pro-
nounced gender gap than other areas within information and communication tech-
nologies (ICT). This underrepresentation of women and individuals who identify as
women (women+) in cybersecurity impacts their professional growth and limits the
development of cybersecurity solutions that consider their specific experiences and
  needs.

                             WOMEN

                       • According to the International Information Systems
Security Certification Consortium (ISC2), over 3 million
cybersecurity job openings exist globally, with between
500,000 and 700,000 of these in Latin America alone.

                       * Women remain underrepresented across STEM-related
fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathemat-
ics), with the gender gap being particularly persistent in
the ICT sector. It's projected that at the current rate, Latin
America and the Caribbean will require around 67 years to
                       close this gap (OAS, 2022, p. 5).

* ISC2 reports that only 24% of the cybersecurity workforce are women, primarily aged
30 to 38, with a slightly higher 30% representation under age 30 (ISC2, p. 39). In other
age groups, the percentage is even lower, underscoring the need for targeted efforts
to support and advance women+ in cybersecurity
