Doherty For the third consecutive year, it's our pleasure to recognize outstanding members of the law library profession. Academic and law firm librarians were nominated by their colleagues, their bosses, or their staff. In fact one entire lawfirm nominated its librarian in a letter of such praise that, as she putit: It didn't matter at all whether I was selected-the letter they wrote was honor enough for me. That's the spirit we had in mind when we opened this forum. Many librarians are outstanding and in a variety of ways; we're happy that this is being reflected in the nominations supporting our public acknowledgment. This year's Outstanding Law Librarians have shown themselves to be helpful, hard-working, and interested in what they do. In our interviews with their patrons, staff and colleagues, we also discovered that they are willing to share their knowledge. J. Wesley Cochran Wes Cochran has always demonstrated his professional commitment in a big way. He was instrumlental in founding the New Orleans Association of Law Librarians (NOALL). Betty Kern, Acquisitions Librarian at the Law Library of Louisiana and a past president of NOALL, remembers, Wes saw the need for greater communication among the law libraries in New Orleans. He worked%\rery hard to bring about the sort of cooperation that resulted ultimately in the founding of NOALL. Through the years Wes has consistently served AALL and the regional associations. While at the University of Washington, he was active in the WestPac Chapter and is now president-elect of the Southeastern Chapter. Wes was nominated by Kern and by Carol Billings, Director of the Law Library of Louisiana. I met Wes when he was head of public services at Loyola University here in New Orleans, says Billings. I've followedhis career since he left Loyola and consider him one of the rising stars in our profession. Wes is currently Director of the Law Library at the University of Mississippi. His three years there have seen budget problems, staff turnover, and a serious fire in the law school, which, though it did not damage the library, did result in Wes's having to make office space in the library for displaced faculty members. He has had to be a jack-of-all-trades, getting involved in both technical services and reference at times and, on top of it all, (continued on next page)
