Discrimination against members of a minority community is a problem that exists worldwide. In the 21st century, members of the LBGTQ+ community have experienced some gains: gay rights, marriage equality, and the abolishment of various discriminatory laws in some nations around the world. However, the LBGTQ+ community has also experienced hate crime violence, marginalization, cultural hostility, and other actions that reinforce their social and legal exclusion. In 2020, for example, although hate crimes against gay persons in the United States decreased, hate crimes against transgender persons increased (Yurcaba, 2021a). In addition, in 2021, the State of Texas had the most anti-transgender bills (40) proposed in 2021 (Freedom for All Americans, 2021a). In November 2021, President Biden participated in a Day of Remembrance for the 45 persons killed by anti-transgender violence in the United States (Judd, 2021). These deaths disproportionately fall on Black transgender individuals, many of who live in the southern United States (Yurcaba, 202ib). According to Freedom for All Americans (2021b), there are 29 states which do not fully protect the LBGTQ+ community from discrimination. To understand the nature and extent of discrimination against the LBGTQ+ community, this volume addresses crime and victimization, discriminatory laws and criminal justice policies, and the impact of discrimination on the LBGTQ+ community. This special issue also presents papers on LBGTQ+ offenders and persons working in the criminal justice system. I hope that you find the following articles to be insightful, and provocative about what the criminal justice system can and should do to respond to the needs of the LBGTQ+ community.
