CHIANG, Research Libraries Group I drink the air before me, and return or ere your pulse beat twice. -The Tempest 5.1 L ike Ariel, the airy spirit in Shakespeare's play, who delivers as fast and as faithfully as his master Prospero requests, Ariel' the new document transmission system developed and pioneered by The Research Libraries Group, Inc., serves its masters-information providers and, in this case, law libraries. Ariel is designed to be faster, more reliable, and less expensive to use than FAX machines. With Ariel, users can scan, store, transmit, and print any image, including court decisions, statutes, regulations, journal and book text, office memoranda, photos, charts, formulae, tables-indeed any material, even objects, can be scanned. Rapid, error-free transmission of the highly compressed image and excellent quality print result from using RLG's proprietary soft- ware and standard PC hardware to transmit data over Internet, a network-of-networks available free at many nonprofit research institutions. A typical page takes an average of 10 seconds to scan, 20 seconds to print, and under a minute to transmit. * Ariel is a trademark of The Research Libraries Group, Inc. Ariel is a stand-alone, PC-to-PC system that works independently of RLIN. Its hardware configuration has three basic components: -At the center is an 80386 IBM PC or compat- ible. Configured with an 80 MG hard disk, it can store over 700 scanned pages, enough to handle the volume of business in a busy inter- library loan department of a large, research university. For a typical law library where the volume of interlibrary loan is comparatively low, an 80286 IBM PC or compatible with an 30 MB hard disk would suffice. Connection to the Internet is through the Ethernet. RLG supports the 3COM EtherLink II Ethernet card. Other Ethernet cards may also be com- patible with Ariel. -Attached to the PC is a scanner. Currendy supported is Hewlett-Packard ScanJet Plus or Panasonic FS-RS506 scanner. Both scanners offer high, 300 x 300 dots per inch resolution, as compared to 100 x 200 dpi for most FAX machines.
