This approach could not be followed with regard to Antarctica.With the adoption of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty in 1991, the protection of the Antarctic environment and associated and dependent ecosystems forms the third pillar of the Antarctic Treaty System. With this Protocol the Contracting Parties committed themselves to the comprehensive protection of the Antarctic environment. This contribution focuses on the question how Contracting Parties ensure supervision of Antarctic activities to assess whether the Antarctic domestic implementing law is respected. The author formulates several recommendations on how the Contracting Parties should strengthen the cooperation in the field of supervision of Antarctic activities.
