Farmer, announced the crea- tion of a special inter-professional committee to review and investigate the many problems involved in the varies aspects of the Battered Child Syndrome. The committee (which will be representative of local doctors, opthalmologists, dentists and lawyers) will attempt to delve into all aspects of the currently critical problem of child abuse -- and to propose remedial leg- islation where necessary. The committee is co-sponsored by the following local professional organ- izations: The St. Louis Medical Society The St. Louis County Medical Society The Greater St. Louis Dental Society The St. Louis Opthalmological Society The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis The makeup of the committee will be announced at a dinner meeting to be held on Tuesday, February 15th under the auspices of the Metropolitan St. Louis Lawyers' Wives, and in conjun- ction with all of the co-sponsoring organizations. The meeting will also feature an ad- dress by Carol R. Archer, M.D., Chief Neuro-Radiologist of the St. Louis University Hospitals, who will define the problem -- and who will also pre- sent a slide presentation detailing the physical aspects of The Shocking Epidemic of Battered Children which she has observed in her practice. The program will be held at the Clay- ton headquarters of The Bar Associa- tion of Metropolitan St. Louis on the 23rd Floor of the 7777 Bonhomme Building, beginning with a reception at 6:30, dinner at 7:30 and with Doctor Archer's presentation follow- ing immediately thereafter. YLS CKLL TO kOTION On October 16 and November 18, members of our Association manned the KMOX Radio Call for Action telephones on an experimental basis to hear inquiries and advise callers if problems were legal ones requiring the attention of an attorney. In all, nine lawyers processed 186 calls during three two-hour sessions. Callers, for the most part, cogently related the facts regarding their problems and genuinely needed to talk to an attorney to determine how to best pursue their matter. Sixty-four of the callers were advised to consult private counsel; 52 were referred to Lawyers' Reference; six were sent to Legal Aid and 14 were referred to the Small Claims Court. Some of the questions were so routine and straightfoward that an answer was given without further reference. The service was enthusiastically received by the community and there have been numerous requests that the project be continued. We have de- cided to man the Call for Action telephones on the first Saturday in each month beginning February 5, 1977, between the hours of 11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. Volunteers are needed.
