Enfin, il 6tablit une corr6lation entre le moddle traditionnel d'assistance sociale au Qu6bec et la reconnaissance tardive de l'enfant comme sujet de droit. This article retraces the distant origins of the Quebec Youth Protection Act to the earliest British and American laws protecting the child from social and family maltreatment. It analyses the State's interested motives in intervening progressively in the family unit to rescue the abused child. It also describes how British laws influenced Canadian child protection legislation, notably in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
