Roche, eminent psychiatrist, stimulating teacher, discerning advocate of better commu- nications between psychiatry and the law, and a creative and staunch participant in the work of The Pennsylvania Prison Society. He helped to plan this issue and led the deliberations of the contributors to this publication. In 1961 he played a leading part in defining the So- ciety's position which called upon the Pennsylvania General Assembly to replace the old Eastern State Penitentiary with a modern institution. From that time until his untimely death on July 30, 1966, Dr. Roche provided outstanding leadership as an active member of the Advisory Committee to the Legislative Task Force. His clear concept of what is needed to help men remake their lives was a highly signifi- cant factor in the deliberations that resulted in the 1965 legislative break-through. Dr. Roche became a member of the Board of Directors of The Pennsylvania Prison Society in 1960. In recognition of his keen interest and intense participation in the activi- ties of the Society, he was this year elected Vice-President. Perhaps the highest tribute that can now be paid to his memory is to assure the realization of his visions of the new institution. He proposed a pioneering program of understanding and treatment of the offender through the establishment of a therapeutic environment. The Society dedicates not only this issue but its future efforts in this direction to the fond memory of Philip Q. Roche, one of our most distinguished and active directors. G.
