BARBARA H. FRIED is William W. and Gertrude H. Saunders Professor of Law at Stanford University. She is the author of The Progressive Assault on Laissez Faire: Robert Hale and the First Law and Economics Movement (Harvard University Press, 1998), and numerous articles on distributive justice in the areas of tax policy and political theory. She has twice previously contributed to Philosophy & Public Affairs.
