handle is hein.journals/pace46 and id is 1 raw text is: FOREWORD The Law School Community mourns the loss of Professor John Humbach, one of our most beloved and knowledgeable teachers. Pro- fessor Humbach unexpectedly passed away on July 14, 2025. Profes- sor Humbach joined Pace University School of Law in 1977 as a found- ing faculty member. From 1982 to 1990, he served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. For over five decades, he taught students in a wide range of courses, including Property, Professional Responsibil- ity, Criminal Law, Contracts, Corporations, Land Use, and Law and Economics. A graduate of Miami University and Ohio State University College of Law, Professor Humbach began his career practicing corporate and securities law in New York City. He transitioned to academia in 1971, teaching at Brooklyn Law School and Fordham University before join- ing Pace Law in 1977. As a professor, Professor Humbach stood out to his students for his intellect, wisdom, and humor. On the first day of class each semester, he directed students to his webpage, where they could find his extensive scholarship, past exams, and helpful study tools-including tutorials and exercises on various property concepts that tend to challenge students year after year.1 Professor Humbach was deeply involved and passionate about environmental and civic initiatives. He participated in numerous com- mittees focused on land use, conservation, and economic develop- ment His work with the Sterling Forest Coalition played a key role in preserving Sterling Forest On September 15, 2025, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends gath- ered at the law school to celebrate and remember the life of Professor Humbach. The speakers included Dean Horace Anderson; President Marvin Krislov; his colleagues-Professor Bennett Gershman; Profes- sor Nicholas Robinson; Lucille Fontana; Deborah Gross-Quatrone; Professor and Dean Emerita Michelle Simon; Professor Emeritus James Fishman; and his son, Thomas Humbach. 1 1.
