Introduction The Humane Society of the United States estimates that shelters euthanize between three and four million dogs and cats each year.1 While many animal welfare organizations have continuously called for an end to animal euthanasia, the reality is that shelters [have] ... limited space and finite resources ....2 Even so, the number of animals euthanized by shelters has decreased nearly 22% since the 1970s.3 Still, animal advocates assert that we can do better.
