IN ....... . ON Differences Between Male and Female Jurors Do women jurors have it over men? Some research indicates that, indeed, there is a difference in the methods of reasoning employed by males and fe- males. The bottom line of such research is that women have a greater ability to use the whole brain than do men, who are more controlled by left-brain orientation. The right hemisphere of the brain is the center of feelings and imagination. It also is the fulcrum of relational, lan- guage and communication skills. That's why tests over the last several decades have demonstrated that women score higher than men in verbal proficiency. Men, on the other hand, do better in mathematical tests. They are left brain oriented, wherein lies the logical, analyt- ical, factual (and, indeed, aggressive) modes. These differences can be traced to the womb. Medical studies have shown that between the 18th and 27th week of pregnancy a male baby's brain undergoes a bath of tes- tosterone and other hormones. The effect is that the right side of the male baby's brain actually recedes slightly, and some of the fibrous tissues of the corpus collosum (which connect the brain's two hemispheres) are destroyed.
