This special issue highlights some of the work presented at the conference. Just as the conference was diverse in respect to its participants and content, so too is this special issue, showcasing a variety of topics, methodologies, geographies, and populations. International Conference on Human Trafficking Research The mission of ICHTR was to establish an academic conference to serve as a forum for outstanding cross-disciplinary research in human trafficking, with the long-term goal of laying the foundation for the emergence of a professional association dedicated to the study of human trafficking. Over 80 people worldwide attended the conference, including people from the United States, the Phillipines, Australia, and Poland. The innaugural conference was International (I), gathering researchers in academic, government, and nonprofits from across the world. The Conference (C) was designed to be a sustainable, annual forum for outstanding cross-disciplinary research. The focus of the conference was Human Trafficking (HT), addressing the full spectrum of issues related to human trafficking. Finally, the conference focused on Research (R), encouraging high quality research spanning a diverse set of perspectives, methods, and disciplines. The leaderhsip of ICHTR was comprised of an Organizing Committee and a Steering Committee. The Steering Committee included top scholars in the field of human trafficking research: Rochelle L. Dalla, Meredith Dank, Maria Laura Di Tommaso, Elzbieta M. Gozdziak, Edward R. Kleemans, Louise I. Shelley, Rebecca Surtees, and Sheldon X. Zhang. The Organizing Committee was comprised of three people in Nebraska connected to human trafficking organizations and scholarship: Jennifer Bossard, Terry Clark, and Crysta Price. Together, the members of the Steering Committee and the Organizing Committee chose the 2019 conference theme: The Field of Human Trafficking: Expanding on the Present State of Research. The inaugural conference included research presentations, poster and panel sessions for graduate students, and poster sessions for undergraduate students. The keynote speaker, Fabrizio Sarrica, Research Officer and Team Leader for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, gave a talk entitled, Taking Stock to Move Ahead - New Perspective for Human Trafficking Studies.
