It brings to light important areas of the Quality and Cost report on legal aid contracting which allow for a close consideration of the nature of clients' relationships with their lawyers in the context of legal aid or legal services work. With the large number of cases involved in the Quality and Cost research it is possible to link concepts of client satisfaction with real competence of their lawyers, as assessed by other lawyers. Two articles consider the legal professions of mainland Europe. Gisela Shaw writes about notaries in civil law Europe, and especially in Germany. The effects of European Union harmonisation and deregulation could constitute a threat to the workings of civil law notaries and their monopolies within each national legal services market. Europeanisation, in this case, may reflect the beginnings of a more common law based view of notaries for the future. Van Houtte and Gibens report on changes in the occupations of law graduates in Belgium over the last fifty years. They note the growth of non-traditional legal occupations being taken up by law graduates and make a plea for further research along these lines in other countries. A strong Legal Education section includes a study of problem solving in legal education from Edwin Greenebaum, a comment on American legal education by David S. Clark and some reflections on clinical education in the United States from Paul Bergman. Good reading!
