Ms Martin, who is currently Group General Counsel and Company Secretary for Vodafone Group, was recognised for her commitment to the promotion of women at all levels. Her efforts have been wide ranging: from championing schemes to encourage women from her early career in private practice, to developing mentoring and reverse mentoring schemes and a Woman's Network during her time at Vodafone. Martin was also recognised for the launch of ID100 - a forum for sharing practical experiences of promoting diversity in the FTSE 100 - in response to the Davies Report on Women in the Boardroom. The judges commented that: 'Rosemary's career demonstrates that it is possible to combine inspirational leadership with powerful advocacy on the importance of encouraging women's aspirations and progression in the workplace.' Gwen Rhys, founder of Women in the City (http://www.citywomen.co.uk/), commented, 'Many women cite lack of role models as a barrier to success. Female lawyers need look no further than this year's winner for the inspiration they need.' Rosemary began her career as a corporate lawyer, becoming partner at a City law firm. From there she was first General Counsel and Company Secretary at Reuters, before moving to Vodafone in 2010. In her role at Vodafone Rosemary has taken on high profile work, such as the $130bn sale of Verizon. She has also been able to take on several diverse non-executive roles, demonstrating the possibilities for general counsel in the boardroom. The Women in the City Category Awards are part of the Woman of Achievement Award (http://www.citywomen.co.uk/?p=woman-of-achievement-award-2013), founded in 2007 by the organisation 'Women in the City', to recognise senior women who promote the progress of women outside the remit of their day job. As well as legal services, awards are made in categories such as: accountancy, financial services, insurance services and technology.
