How much is too much: the difficulties of social media content
moderation

1. Introduction

My favorite movie of all-time is 'The Social Network,' a 2010 film by David Fincher and
Aaron Sorkin. I could get into a long discussion about my love for Fincher's stylistic
approaches with regard to camera movement and lighting, Sorkin's 'West Wing-esque'
dialogue, and the unforgettable score by Reznor and Ross. However, what I love most
about the film is how it portrays the business aspect of social media, something often
overlooked for the glitz and glamour that we see on our screens. Throughout the film,
Fincher showcased Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin pitted against each other in
an overly dramatic, passion-fueled fight for control of what is now known as Facebook.
I have seen that movie dozens of times and, each time, I doubted the existence of a dra-
matic and serious side of social media companies. I attributed much of the dialogue to the
fact that I was watching a movie, not considering for a second that there could be a darker
