ERA Forum enters a new chapter with this first issue of 2007. The inauguration of
our partnership with the publishing house Springer marks a significant step forward
in the Academy of European Law's ambition, through this quarterly journal, to reach
a wider public of practitioners and students of European law than already addressed
by the conferences and seminars we have been organising at our centre in Trier and
throughout Europe since our foundation fifteen years ago.
There has already been a substantial widening of ERA Forum's readership since
it first appeared in 2000. Further issues will build on the existing strengths of the
journal in the full range of European law addressed by ERA's in-house legal team,
including European private, business, public and criminal law.
In looking for a partner with which to publish ERA Forum we approached
a number of houses from different European countries and were honoured that sev-
eral expressed interest in cooperating with us. Springer stood out for a number of
reasons, not least that - like ERA - while it has roots in Germany, it has flourished
on the European and indeed the global scene. Founded originally in Berlin in 1842,
Springer has long focused on scientific publishing. As its business developed through
mergers and buyouts with other publishing houses such as Bertelsmann and Kluwer
Academic Publishers, so its portfolio and international profile grew. Today Springer
publishes more than 5,000 new books every year and 1450 journals, of which more
than 40 are devoted to various areas of law.
