From the unprecedented, despotic reign of Kene- saw Mountain Landis through the litigatory maze cre- ated by Bowie Kuhn to the vacant days of today, the role of the commissioner of baseball to act in the sport's best interests has, indeed, been a hazy one. Recently, baseball owners attempted to redefine the commissioner's role. It is too early to tell if, when the dust settles, the office itself will remain in the best interests of baseball, never mind whether its occupant will act in the best interests of the game.'
