American Arbitration Association Foreword With the pandemic of 2020 affecting every facet of the dispute resolution field, the American Arbitration Association® (the AAA®) seized the oppor- tunity to accelerate its virtual and distance learning education and training initiatives. During the second quarter of the year, the AAA's Education Ser- vices department shifted its priorities from supporting in-person, classroom education and training events to supporting arbitration and mediation in a virtual world. The department's first initiatives were to support the development of a Virtual Hearing Guide for Arbitrators and Parties and to create a companion document titled AAA-ICDR Panelist Resource Guide for Virtual Arbitra- tion Hearings. The former document, available to the general public on the AAA's website, provides guidance to arbitrators and parties on how to optimize the virtual arbitration experience. The latter document provides AAA arbitrators with (i) an overview of the risks associated with virtual arbitration hearings, (ii) a comparison of the most popular video confer- encing platforms, (iii) guidance on using AAA-hosted virtual hearings via the Zoom video conferencing platform, and (iv) conducting virtual hearings using either their own personal video conferencing accounts or that of one of the parties. A quick follow-up to these first two initiatives was the creation of Vir- tual Hearings: Best Practices for Arbitrators, a 49-minute recorded video tutorial about how to effectively use the most common features of the Zoom video conferencing platform, such as passwords, the waiting room, screen sharing, and managing breakout rooms.
