handle is hein.journals/apjel8 and id is 1 raw text is: Editorial Inauguration of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law and its First Colloquium on the Law of Energy for Sustainable Development The IUCN World Conservation Union's Commission on Environmental Law (CEL) has created an IUCN Academy of Environmental Law intended to link the environmental law programmes of the world. Inspired and spearheaded by the CEL's Chair, Professor Nicholas Robinson of Pace Law School in White Plains, New York, the Academy should be of immense value to the Asian Pacific countries, making readily available the knowledge and experience of academic environmental law experts in every field of environmental law. The Academy will also provide a forum for these experts to do joint research and exchange information from one country or region that will be valuable to others. It holds an annual colloquium, each year in a different region of the world, on topics of vital interest to the environment and to its members. The Academy was launched on 4 November 2003 in Shanghai where it also held its first colloquium on The Law of Energy for Sustainable Development. Both events were hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. UN Secretary General Kofi A. Annan welcomed the establishment of a new global network of university law departments dedicated to environmental law which he described as setting forth the principles and rules that states have adopted in order to protect precious ecosystems and resources upon which all life and progress depend. His message to the over 150 professors, representing 90 university law faculties from forty-one nations, meeting for four days in Shanghai, China, stated, The United Nations looks forward to the teaching and research that the Academy will now undertake. And we welcome the academic contributions that law professors worldwide will make towards our common goal of sustainable development on our one and only planet. IUCN established this new Academy to implement recommendations made at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
