Report To The Congress

OF THE UNITED STATES

Air Force And Navy Trainer

Aircraft Acquisition Programs

GAP examined the status of one Navy and
two Air Force Programs to acquire 1,184
trainer aircraft costing an estimated $10.8
bill on over the next decade. GAO found
that

--The Department of Defense needs to
firm up its plans to acquire T-45 aircraft
for training Navy pilots. In doing so, the
Navy should be directed to consider
extending use of its present aircraft.

--The Air Force's T-46A has experienced
some cost growth. Its accelerated en-
   gine development and concurrent test-
ing and production are areas of poten-
   tial concern.

--The Air Force planned to begin develop-
   ment of the Tanker-Transport-Bomber
Training System in fiscal year 1983,
but the Congress did not authorize%
I appropriations for the program in that'
year. The Air Force has applied for,
   fiscal year 1984 approval.
