U. S. Must Spend More To

Maintain Lead In Space Technology

Space ruanufactur rig offers the possibility of
exploitiriq the unique environment of space to
produce materials superior to those produced
on Earth or believed impossible to produce on
Earth. Whether space manufacturing becomes
a reality depends on the results of future
materials research and the propensity of gov
ernment and industry, both here and abroad,
to invest. Success will require eliminating
some difficult institutional barriers and creat-
ing incentives.

Despite high expectations among U.S. scien-
tists, only limited success can be expected in
the next 20 years due to low funding and
limited backing by the Administration and
the Congress. This could let foreign compet-
hors rapidly overcome any technological lead
in materials science in space now enjoyed by
the United States.
