Alternatives For The Bureau Of

Indian Affairs Public School

Financial Assistance Program

The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Department of
the Interior, began a 3-year phaseout in 1976
of its Johnson O'Malley basic support pro-
gram, which provides funds for public schools
to assist in educating Indian children. How-
ever, the Congress enacted legislation in 1978
reinforcing it. Interior has not requested fund-
ing to continue the program since fiscal year
1978, and the program's future is uncertain.

This report offers three options to the Con-
gress in deciding the program's future.
