GAO has reviewed a total of 74 wind tunnels
costing about $309 million. During Fiscal year
1975 the average use of NASA wind tunnels
ranged from 59 percent for hypersonic tun-
nels to 76 percent for subsonic tunnels. Oper-
ating costs totaled about $18 million.
NASA is in the process of centralizing its
aeronautical research activities and eliminat-
ing unneeded faciiities. NASA plans to con-
struct a new wind tunnel costing about $65
milion and plans to modify others.
