January 4. 1919 THE CHATEAU-THIERRY OF THE BEVERAGE LIQUOR TRAFFIC IN AMERICA Trench Warfare and Legislative Maneuvers--A Word to the Women Voters of the Empire State When the American soldiers landed in Europe, both France and England were impressed with their enthusiasm, their determination to whip the Hun and their disregard for old army customs and conventions. One of the French generals at the time was quoted as saying that the American had a very great advantage over European troops in that they had been able to take up the new% mode of warfare and had nothing to unlearn-that the other troops had been trained in old- fashioned modes of warfare and not only had to learn the new methods but forget the old. In the battles over there, our men have shown not only. wonderful teamwork, but distinct individuality. They have the power of initiative and the ability to think and act for themselves in an emergency if necessity requires it. They are unique among the soldiers of the world. Among the forces of righteousness in New York state the women have about the same position as the American soldiers in Europe. Neither one has old methods to forget-the average wornan knows nothing of the political red-tape and customs that bind most men. The women see the thing to be done and go ahead and do it even though it was never done that way before. Some of the men who have fought so valiantly for righteousness in the past have lost a bit of the freshness and enthusiasm that they had in the early days, although their dogged persistence is still with them, but the women, like the American soldiers, come in with a new vision, fresh and determined to win this tremendous fight for righteousness.
