Born in Scenic in 1913, he took his undergraduate work at USD and law at George Washington University. He served as a Naval intelligence officer during WWII. From 1946 to 1950 he was a trial attorney for the Department of Justice in Washington, D. C., Assistant U.S. Attorney 1950-54, associated with Doyle, Mahoney & Dunn, Sioux Falls, from 1954-56, Sioux Falls Municipal. Judge from 1956-59, and was Second Ciruit Court Judge from 1959 until his appointment to the Supreme Court.
