handle is hein.barjournals/ncsbarnew0015 and id is 1 raw text is: The North Carolina State Bar Newsletter Volume 15 Number 1 Winter 1990 Public Hearing on Pro osed Speciaization Standards for Criminal Law March 19, 1990 Upon the recommendation of the Board of Legal Specialization, the Council has approved the estab- lishment of a specialty in criminal law and a sub- specialty in appellate criminal law. The approval of the North Carolina Supreme Court is currently being sought. The specialty has been defined as follows: The specialty of criminal law is the practice of law deal- ing with the defense of those charged with mis- demeanor and felony crimes in state and federal trial and appellate courts. Subspecialty in the field is identified and defined as follows: Criminal appel- late practice - The practice of criminal law at the appellate court level. A Criminal Law Specialty Committee, which was created by the Board last year, has developed proposed standards for certification as a specialist in criminal law. The proposed standards (which ap- pear on pages 10-13) will be the subject of a public hearing which will be held at 2:00 p.m. on March 19, 1990, at the State Bar headquarters, 208 Fayetteville Street Mall, Raleigh. Any interested person or organization wishing to appear at the hearing should contact L. Thomas Lunsford, Direc- tor of the Board of Legal Specialization, at the State Bar office. Written comments are also solicited. After the public hearing, the Criminal Law Specialty Committee will make its final recommen- dation to the Board. The Board in turn expects to offer a proposal to the State Bar Council at its meeting in April. If the Council and the Supreme Court take favorable action, the Board hopes to ac- cept applications for certification from criminal law practitioners this summer.
