handle is hein.barjournals/ncsbarnew0014 and id is 1 raw text is: The North Carolina State Bar Newsletter Volume 14 Number 1 Winter 1989 Council Approves Establishment of Family Law Specialty Public Hearing on Proposed Standards March 17, 1989 Upon the recommendation of the Board of Legal Specialization, the Council has approved the estab- lishment of a specialty in family law. The approval of the North Carolina Supreme Court is currently being sought. The specialty has been defined as follows: The specialty of family law is the practice of law relat- ing to marriage, divorce, alimony, child custody and support, equitable distribution, enforcement of support, domestic violence, bastardy, and adop- - tion. A Family Law Specialty Committee, which was created by the board last summer, has developed proposed standards for certification as a specialist in family law. The proposed standards will be the subject of a public hearing which will be held at 2:00P.M. on Friday, March 17, 1989 at the State Bar headquarters, 208 Fayetteville Street Mall, Raleigh (See page 6-Specialization Update). Any interested person or organization wishing to appear at the hearing should contact Tom Lunsford, Direc- tor of the Board of Legal Specialization, at the State Bar office. Written comments are also solicited. After the public hearing the Family Law Special- ty Committee will make its final recommendations to the board. The board in turn expects to offer a proposal to the State Bar Council at its meeting in April. If the Council and the Supreme Court take favorable action, the board hopes to accept applica- tions for certification from family law practitioners this summer. Howard L. Gum of Gum and Hillier, P.A., in Asheville was appointed chairman for a three-year term. Other members appointed for three-year terms are Thomas R.
