This Committee is to hold one meet- ing in each of the four judicial divisions each year. I will ask each District Bar President to serve on the Committee as well as a representative of the District Bar who is 35 years of age or under. These representatives will attend the meeting in their division. The four State Bar officers and several members of the Executive Committee of the State Bar from the area of the State where the meeting is held will also attend. The meetings will be less than one day in length and will be loosely structured to en- courage participation by those in attendance. We will also have a meeting of the State/District Bar Liaison Committee at each of the quarterly meetings of the Council and at the Annual Meeting in Char- lotte in September 1979. Attendance at the quarterly meetings will be optional. We are asking for a district bar representative under the age of 35 for two reasons. One, the bar in North Carolina has changed in the last ten years from one where the average age of a lawyer was about 50 to one where the average age is now less than 35 due to the great number of recent law graduates. Second, we feel that a Committee with a strong representation by younger lawyers will be beneficial. These meetings will be relatively small with 20-35 persons attending. We will welcome any member of the Bar in the division where the meeting is held to attend as an observer. The locations of the four meetings will be announced. They will be in the division and no district bar officer should have to travel very far to attend the meetings. As officers of your State Bar, we need to be informed of developments, problems, trends and attitudes with- in the bar. We know that through the District Bars we can create greater interest in the work dele- gated to us by statute. This, in time, will enable us to render better legal services to the general public. For that reason, we are going out to the Districts in 1979 through the District Bar Liaison Committee meet- ings. This is one way for us to measure the pulse of the bar to assess its needs - your needs - and diagnose matters of concern to our profession. Renovation of the new building is nearing completion. We hope to be moved in by the April meeting. The State Bar Council at the January meeting endorsed a plan to increase the number of Councilors from the Districts. This, in my opinion, is a step which will create better repre- sentation of the various District Bars on the State Bar Council. Grady B. Stott, President
