In honor of the election of a southern man, John C. Satterfield, Jackson and Yazoo City, Mississippi, as President of the Amer- ican Bar Association, the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee should join in sponsoring this Regional Meeting. Mr. Clopper Almon, President of the Ala- bama State Bar, has extended an invitation to the Mississippi State Bar to be co-sponsor of this Southeast Regional Meeting. Presid- ent Cottrell, in response to this invitation, has appointed a committee to serve on the Advisory Committee of the Southeast Re- gional Meeting. The committee met with the members of the American Bar Associa- tion group at the Tutwiler Hotel in Birming- ham on January 20 to make preliminary plans for the meeting in November. The committe members appointed by Cottrell are as follows: Earl T. Thomas (Jackson) Gibson Witherspoon (Meridian) W. S. Henley (Hazlehurst) Thomas J. Tubb (West Point) Gene A. Wilkinson (Jackson) K. Hayes Callicutt (Jackson) 0 San Jose And Tokyo To Be Peace-Through-Law Conference Sites Chicago - The Central American city of San Jose, capital of Costa Rica, will be the site of the first of four continental con- ferences of lawyers and judges planned to be held in 1961 under the auspices of the American Bar Association special comniittee on world peace through law. The second conference will be in Tokyo, Japan, for lawyers of Asian nations. Present plans of the ABA committee are to hold the San Jose conference as soon as possible after March 1 and the Tokyo con- ference about two or three months later. Bar Associations Getting Early Start on Law Day USA Planning Appointments of 1961 Law Day USA chairmen by state and local bar associa- tions are off to a fast start. By the end of November, more than 600 associations had reported to the American Bar Associa- tion the names and addresses of chairmen to direct Law Day USA planning in their states and communities. This is a far larger number than had been appointed by the same time last year. Seek Early Reports on Program Plans Even before detailed plans are complete, the American Bar Association would like to receive a brief report on any outstand- ing or unusual forms of observance in con- templation for Law Day USA next May 1. These reports are needed for two important reasons: 1) For use in connection with ABA contacts with national television and radio networks about possible package pro- grains linked with Law Day USA, and 2) To provide some definite early indications of the scope and nature of local Law Day USA planning. We are interested especially in events involving nationally prominent speakers, but want to know also about other programs of an interesting or significant nature. ABA Materials Soon To Be Ready For Mailing The informational and promotional mater- ials being produced by the American Bar Association are mostly ready now, or in advanced stages of preparation. In early December, bar secretaries and Law Day USA chairmen will receive an order form on which they can place early orders for shipments of billboards, window display cards, informatioli manuals for distribution to lay organizations, Law Day USA Speak- ers' Digest, envelope stickers, and leaflets for public distribution at the time Law Day programs are held. The Manual is scheduled to be ready for distribution by Jan. 15, and the Speakers' Digest shortly thereafter. To avoid disappointments or last-minute complications it is important to get orders in early. The new envelope stickers are now ready. They can be used by bar associations, or individual law offices, on all first class mail that goes out after January 1, 1961. They are easy to apply and inexpensive - only $1.60 per thousand. Some local bar as- sociations may wish to order these in quant- ity for re-sale to their members, as well as for their own dffice use. (Continued on page eight)
