MALTBIE In one of his addresses, speaking of this little State of ours, Dr. Horace Bushnell quoted these words from the historian Bancroft: There is no State in the Union, and I know not of my in the world, in whose early history, if I were a citizen, I zould find more of which to be proud. Dr. Bushnell then added this comment: My own conviction is that this early history, though not the mostprominent, is really the most beautiful that was ever permitted to any State or people in the world. It is peculiarly fitting to repeat these words to this gathering, for blessed as is the memory of Dr. Bushnell to this city, to this State, and to this denomination of Christians, it should be dear in a very special sense to the people of this church, the pastor of one branch of which he was so long. And it is peculiarly fitting to the subject upon which I am going to speak, for I pro- pose to introduce to you--or, shall I be more polite, and say, make better known to you-a very perfect gentleman, who con- tributed greatly to make that early history what it was, John Winthrop, called the Younger, because he was the son of the illustrious Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts.
