On the evening of Friday, November 21, 1930, the Hartford County Bar tendered to the Hon. George W. Wheeler and the Hon. William M. Maltbie a dinner at the Hartford Club in recognition of the former's retirement by reason of the constitutional age limitation from the office of Chief justice of the State of Connecticut, and of the latter's succession to that office. On the evening of Friday, December 12, 1930, a dinner was tendered to the Hon. George W. Wheeler at the Hotel Strat- field by the members of his home bar of Fairfield County. The unusual importance of these affairs, marking the end of the judicial career of a great Chief Justice and the be- ginning of the term of a new Chief Justice, already great in his service upon the bench, seemed to the Special Com- mittee on the publication of the Bar Journal to require more than passing notice. The committee therefore decided to devote this issue of the Journal to a report of the speeches delivered by the distinguished guests. John T. Robinson, president of the Hartford Bar Associa- tion introduced the speakers at the dinner in that city- Hon. Arthur L. Shipman, the Hon. Arthur P. Rugg, Chief Jus- tice of Massachusetts, the Hon.
