handle is hein.barjournals/cbarpts1970 and id is 1 raw text is: Cincinnati Bar Association LKELEW Vol. 8, No. 5 New Dean To Speak At Dinner T he new Dean of the University of Cincinnati College of Law will make his first public appear- ance in the city when he appears as principal speaker at the Cincinnati Bar Association's quarterly dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at Stouffer's Cincinnati Inn. Edward A. Mearns, Jr., Professor of Law at Northwestern University School of Law since 1967, will be the speaker. He will assume the post of Dean of the UC Law School on July 1. All members of the CBA and their guests are invited to attend a reception to meet Prof. and Mrs. Mearns at 5:30 p.m. in the Bronze Room of Stouffer's. Mr. and Mrs. John R. Bullock will be the hosts. A graduate of Yale University in economics and the University of Virginia Law School, Prof. Mearns served with the Naval Reserve for over three years. While on the fac- ulty of the University of Virginia, he was Associate Dean from 1963 to 1967. He has also been a lecturer at the University of Rome and the University of Messina. He has been a consultant on civil rights to the U.S. Commissioner of Education and on equal education opportunity to the U.S. Commis- sion on Civil Rights. He received a Ford Foundation grant in 1962 to study Negro Public Education and a Fulbright Lectureship in Italy in 1962-63. Prof. Mearns' subjects of special interest are constitutional law, civil rights, torts, legal philosophy, American legal history, and law and social change. He is the author of numerous books, monographs, articles, book reviews, studies and reports on the above subjects. In his acceptance, Professor Mearns said that the UC Law School has established a tradition of providing excellence in legal education and he feels it is a great privilege to become a part of this tradition. I He also noted the special op- portunity being afforded to serve legal education in an urban setting. The cities and their problems are presenting our law schools with a tremendous challenge, but also the occasion for significant achieve- ment in the law if that challenge is met. Professor Mearns added that he looks forward to joining the splendid faculty of the Law School and its fine student body. He said he wishes to share in their con- tinued effort to serve with dis- tinction the University, the legal profession, and the community.
